Primal Bite is a Paleo meal-prep service specializing in dairy, gluten, and grain free recipes. Along with all of our products being Paleo, many are Keto-friendly and Whole30, as well!

We think that food should taste delicious and not fall short in any area, especially nutrition. That’s how Primal Bite began. We saw a shortage of tasty, healthy food options, particularly convenient ones.

Our owner, Taylor, has been an avid cook her entire life and a food blogger since 2016. After meeting her husband, Jon, they discovered he had a lactose-intolerance and other digestive issues that threw her cooking for a loop. Comfort food was her bread and butter, but due to her husband’s intolerance, she was forced to remove dairy from their diet.

Around the same time as their discovery, Jon began doing Crossfit and was introduced to the Paleo diet through the Crossfit community. Taylor, having grown up on a farm where they raised most of which they consumed, but currently living in a world where convenience and processed foods gets the best of a person, was excited to learn about this way of eating. After just a couple weeks of eating “clean” and removing grains, legumes, dairy, and processed foods, their lives were changed. More energy, better digestion, mood improvements, and better sleep were just a few of the things that they noticed immediately!

You might be asking, “What exactly is the Paleo diet?” The word “paleo” is derived from the term “paleolithic” from the  paleolithic era, when the caveman supposedly could have lived. In a nutshell, the paleo diet says, “If a caveman didn’t eat it, neither should you!” You can eat anything that you could have hunted or gathered way back in the day, such as meat, fish, nuts, leafy greens, vegetables, and seeds. All of those processed foods (including grains), refined sugars, and refined vegetable oils where not a thing during that time. Starchy vegetables are up for debate in the Paleo world. Some find that the sugar from the carbohydrates make it off-limits for paleo eaters. Sweet potatoes and plantains are some of the exceptions, as they have higher nutrition values that your standard white potato.

Generally, the nutritional parameters to make foods “paleo” are:
  • High in protein
  • Low in carbs
  • High in fiber
  • High in potassium
  • Moderate to high fat content (mono- or polyunsaturated fats)
  • High in vitamins and minerals
  • Low in sodium
  • Low on the glycemic index

So, what good is this way of eating? Through the centuries, our genetics haven’t changed, but our bodies have. The typical person back then could be described as agile, athletic, and muscular. The average person today is far from that, but rather out of shape, stressed out, unhappy, and dying from preventable diseases.

What changed? The way we gathered food is what changed! Instead of hunting and gathering our own foods, we developed mass farming and GMOs. We turned to pastas, grains, cereals, corn, and so on, because of the ease of mass production. Have you ever heard a brand, company, commercial, or dietitian recommended 6-11 servings of grains per day? The chances are you have, and yet, our society keeps getting more and more unhealthy. These genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been linked to numerous health problems, including killing off good bacteria in the gut, therefore, damaging your digestive system. Can you sense that something is WRONG here?

Statistics should be enough to make one realize just how detrimental this reality has become to our bodies and lives.

66% of us are overweight, 33% are considered obese, and those numbers aren’t improving. Young adults are half as likely to have obesity as middle-aged adults. Read more of these startling statistics here

Something has to change. However, we realize that change IS hard and food (particularly, the bad food many of us consume daily) IS addicting! We get it. Not only, do many people have no clue where to begin with healthy eating, many don’t have the time and patience to develop healthy, delicious meals during their busy lifestyles.
